On Monday, May 8th, Professor Ahmed Busnaina was invited as a speaker for the Medical Sensors Design Conference, in Newton, MA. This event was dedicated to driving sensor development and innovation in medical and healthcare applications.
During his presentation, called Printed Micro and Nanoscale Wearable Biosensors for Physiological Monitoring and Other Medical Sensing Applications. Dr. Busnaina present how Nanotechnology promises to revolutionize biosensors for monitoring of a large number of biomarkers. Although printed electronics and sensors utilize nano materials, currently their smallest feature is 20 microns (which was the smallest features in electronics in 1975) although this may be sufficient for many applications, its scale leaves it far behind today’s silicon electronics. We present a new technology that uses directed assembly based printing of metals, insulators and semiconductors organic and inorganic materials into micro and nanoscale structures and circuits (down to 20 nanometers) on flexible and rigid substrates. The technology is used to print a biosensor platform for real-time pathogen monitoring and for wearable sensors to monitor physiologic state. These printed flexible sensors were printed for wearable sensors that could be used as an electronic skin or for physiological monitoring as well as environmental monitoring.
